In August Tine, Steve (& Minnie) were off to Englishman River Falls near Parksville. What a beautiful place - waterfalls coming straight out of the mountains with crystal clear, green-ish water. But... man was the water ever cold! No doubt, one of our main memories of this place will be the comment of one of the snorkelers who exclaimed, "This is colder than the ocean!" It was.

Steve Demonstrates what pastors really do when they're not saving the world!

Minnie was sure to stand guard at the campsite. After 3 years of searching we finally found a practical use for her... her abnormally large teeth provided a way for us to make kindling for the campfire in the absence of an axe!

You go, girl!!
To our mutual surprise and delight (especially Tine's), the campground is located only a few minutes from the North Island Wildlife Recovery Association. This is a unique place, filled with animals that are injured in the wild for various reasons (mainly through contact with people), and are then brought here
In most cases, the animals are nursed back to health and then released into the wild.
Unfortunately, sometimes the animals would be unable to survive in their natural settings, and so they must stay at the shelter.
"Brian" the Bald Eagle is dear to our hearts. He was shot illegally, yet somehow survived. His beak was virtually destroyed, but the shelter's doctor was able to give him a prosthetic beak(!) at the on-site hospital. Now he leads a relatively normal life at the shelter.
This big guy is "Knut" - a mature male black bear who finally woke up for us so that we could take his picture. He came to the shelter as a cub and has become one of the key attractions.
